Here's a prediction, for those of you with a soft spot for culinary fortune-telling: 2013 will be the Year of the Goat. Of course, goat is a staple in many parts of the world, but it's been uncommon on menus catering to white-bread American tastes. Not for much longer.

The buzz is already starting ? goat is creeping onto menus that never would have featured it in the past. In Santa Monica, Tar & Roses offers an entire meal of wood-fired goat. Dining clubs this summer in L.A. roasted whole goats for delighted participants. In other parts of the country, too, taste-makers are organizing goat dinners, hoping to bring this underappreciated meat to their customers.

Diners and cooks looking to get a jump start on the impending Age of Goat ought to head to Gish Bac, a modest Oaxacan restaurant in Mid-City, and partake of the goat barbacoa, which is served on weekends only. Owners David Padilla and Maria Ramos cook goat in the Oaxacan style: chili-roasted for hours and hours in a pit. It comes to the table swimming in meaty juices, red from chili and tomato. After trying it wrapped in warm, fresh tortillas with a little cabbage slaw, you'll see that American chefs are late to the goat game.

Padilla and Ramos are continuing a tradition of barbacoa that began in their hometown of Tlacolula, Oaxaca. "Maria is the third generation of the family who made one of the best goat barbecues in Tlalcolua," Padilla says. After moving to L.A. 20 years ago, they began cooking for family and friends ? "barbecue, because that's our specialty" ? and, at the urging of folks who wanted access to their barbacoa more regularly, they opened Gish Bac in 2010.

It's a small, sunny space with yellow walls, tables in front and a lunch counter in back, facing the kitchen. While the restaurant is known for its weekend barbecue items, throughout the week it has plenty of other offerings that are also a step above those at other Oaxacan restaurants.

Come in for breakfast and have eggs scrambled with the fantastic house-made chorizo, or try one of the memelas con carne ? a thick, soft masa pancake spread with musky black beans and topped with your choice of meat; the cesina, or thin slices of pork, which have been marinated and cooked, is particularly satisfying. In fact, just because this dish is on the breakfast menu doesn't mean you shouldn't order it for lunch as well; the one time I had it at dinner, the masa seemed a touch dried out, but I gobbled it up nonetheless.

There's a fantastic black mole, a swarthy, complex version that's both wicked and soothing. And a "red sauce" that I loved just as much, served over the salsa de chorizo con cesina, a slab of pork with orbs of chorizo on top. The sauce was mellow, lightly spicy and aggressively fruity, thanks to long-cooked fresh tomatoes and the light, almost citrus notes of epazote, a Oaxacan herb.

It's things like that ? a ramp-up of flavors, an unexpected ingredient ? that make Gish Bac exceptional. In the yellow mole empanada with chicken, an empanada that was more like a cheeseless quesadilla, a pert yellow sauce gets an extra kick from hoja santa, which Padilla describes as "Oaxacan mint." The leaf, layered between the tortilla and the meat, gave a pleasantly bitter sting every few bites.

The mole tamales (listed on the weekend-only part of the menu but available all the time) are intensely aromatic; the redolence of the masa paired with that dark mole is a lovely study in the concept of bittersweet.

And on weekends, there's that barbacoa. Go with a friend, and get both the goat and the lamb, which is cooked in avocado leaf and chiles and comes with a bowl of juices for dipping the meat. If you order the lamb, you'll get a plate ahead of the main course, a mixture made of all the lamb offal, deeply spiced and with a kick of dark heat. With a flavor much like a spicy black sausage, it's fantastic scooped up on corn chips.

Seated at a table near the front windows of Gish Bac, the sun setting and the remnants of goat and lamb barbacoa strewn across the table in front of us, a friend reached for another bite of the black beans that come with the tender hunks of lamb.

"There's something about everything here," she said. "Even the beans. They're just special."

When a family brings generations of tradition, craft and expertise to the table, the results are pretty special indeed.

Daina Beth Solomon contributed to this story.

Azeri SOCAR keeps BP as field operator, confirms output plan

BAKU (Reuters) - Azerbaijan's state oil firm signaled on Wednesday BP would keep the operatorship of one of its major foreign projects after Baku recently accused the British oil major of "false promises" following a shortfall in planned output.

The head of Azeri SOCAR said it was working with BP on a plan to keep output roughly flat at the Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli (ACG) field through the end of the decade and was not looking at a change of operator there. It expects production of 33 million metric tonnes (36.37 million tons) this year and in 2013.

"We are preparing a program which envisages oil production at ACG at 33-34 million tonnes in 2015-20," SOCAR chief Rovnag Abdullayev told reporters.

"The contract has not been changed," Abdullayev said, referring to BP's operatorship. "I think there is no need to use possibilities, which are envisaged by this contract."

Falling output at the ACG oilfields, one of BP's largest global projects, raised concerns in the ex-Soviet republic and prompted its president to accuse BP of making false promises.

ACG was expected to produce more than 1 million barrels per day (bpd) after a third phase was completed in 2008. But after hitting 823,000 bpd in 2010, output has fallen, averaging 684,000 bpd in the first half of this year.

Abdullayev said he would have talks with three BP vice-presidents who were visiting Baku. BP confirmed there were negotiations, but declined to elaborate.

"Talks are under way," Tamam Bayatly, BP Azerbaijan's spokeswoman, said. "We will issue a press release later today."

Azerbaijan said BP had promised to sack staff responsible for the output shortfall. BP later made managerial changes in its Azeri office which it said were not related to President Ilham Aliyev's criticism.

Exxon Mobil , Chevron and Statoil also have stakes in the consortium.

Oil executives and diplomats told Reuters last month BP would have to invest billions of dollars more than previously planned in order to slow the output decline. Doing so might not be commercially viable if the PSA is not extended beyond 2024.

SOFTER TONE

Abdullayev's comments on Wednesday made clear that Azerbaijan did not intend to expel BP, the oil-rich country's biggest investor and a major tax payer.

Abdullayev said SOCAR did not believe that BP intentionally perpetrated the decline on its partners, saying there was no "trace or probability" of such wrongdoing.

He added that one of the reasons for the decline was a gas leakage at Azeri field in 2008, which disrupted works at the platform for two months.

"We also could not fulfill output forecast after that accident," Abdullayev said, but added: "BP's tactics after the accident was not managing risks, but avoiding them."

Analysts said BP could be encouraging SOCAR to soften its position on the ACG decline by offering concessions to the Azeri state energy company on other points of contention over their projects in Azerbaijan.

"Negotiations between BP and SOCAR over joint projects in Azerbaijan gave positive results," Ilham Shaban, the head of the Baku-based independent Centre for Oil Research, told Reuters.

They are at odds over delivery and marketing of gas from the next phase of another giant hydrocarbon project, Shah Deniz.

Shaban also suggested BP might be willing to withdraw its request to extend its the production sharing agreement at ACG beyond 2024.

Abdullayev said an extension was not under consideration.

Idiot Detroit Columnist Labels San Francisco A "Strange Baseball Town" Because The Food Is So Amazing

Idiot Detroit Columnist Labels San Francisco A "Strange Baseball Town" Because The Food Is So AmazingFor all the reasons one can/should/better love the spectacle and awesomeness of the World Series, one perpetual risk is that some lazy newspaper columnist will come out and play the "Robinson Crusoe" card, acting like they've suddenly been dropped on a remote Pacific island with no other way of passing the time than by writing, in gripping details, about their strange and foreign surroundings. You know, except with some baseball thrown in.

This year, Jeff Seidel of the Detroit Free Press is more than happy to take up that mantle, penning a column today on how AT&T Park is such a wacky and weird stadium, even though it's apparent he's only ever attended one game in person. Regardless, he has some important views on baseball by the Bay:

SAN FRANCISCO ? Now, the San Francisco Giants have a talented team.

And they play in an amazing, beautiful stadium in an unbelievable setting near San Francisco Bay. It's breathtaking.

But there is no way the Detroit Tigers can lose to these guys. They would never live it down.

First of all, the Giants have a Build-A-Bear Workshop in the stands behind leftfield at AT&T Park. Seriously. How the heck can you lose to a team where the fans can go to a game and stuff a teddy bear and then buy a cute little outfit?

Can you imagine that in Detroit?

Get real.

We'd run them out of town, just because it sounds so wimpy.

You can tell he's serious because each sentence is its own paragraph.

Also, Jeff Seidel is a huge idiot.

And then they have a giant slide, which looks like a McDonald's play station on steroids.

Yeah, the Tigers have a carousel. But carousels are cool.

Solid logic there.

Slides? That's for a playground.

But that's just the start.

AT&T Park isn't a baseball stadium. It's an exotic food court that happens to have a baseball field.

Few San Francisco fans would ever lower themselves to eating a beer and a brat. Or even a coney.

I've attended maybe 50 games at Pac Bell/SBC/AT&T Park in my 10 years in the Bay Area, and I've seen fans (a) drinking beer and (b) eating brats at every single game.

Also, Jeff Seidel is a clueless idiot.

They sit there ? decked out in orange and black, waving orange towels ? watching their Giants while eating garlic fries, crab sandwiches on grilled sourdough bread, clam chowder, fried calamari, sweet potato fries with cinnamon and chipotle sprinkle, and clove garlic chicken sandwiches.

Others can be found drinking margaritas, Irish coffee and an assortment of wines.

Can you imagine eating clam chowder and drinking wine in the bleachers at old Tiger Stadium?

You'd get thrown out on your tush. Just because.

Ah, more thinly veiled code words from Seidel, comparing big/bad/tough Detroit with "wimpy" San Francisco. Classy.

It bears repeating, I feel, that Jeff Seidel is a mammoth, otherworldly idiot.

Outside of AT&T Park, there are palm trees lit up with Christmas lights.

Seriously?

Now, I know they rarely get snow here. But that's just wrong, unless it's at a Jimmy Buffett concert.

This stadium has other quirks that affect play on the field. Which brings us to rightfield.

The foul pole down the rightfield line is 309 feet, which is going to look pretty tempting to Prince Fielder. Shoot, maybe even to Miguel Cabrera, with all of his opposite-field power.

But the outfield wall is strange and quirky.

It quickly juts out to 365 feet in right and goes to 421 in right-center, before coming back to 399 in center.

It can only be surmised that Jeff Seidel hates things that are interesting.

We can also surmise that Jeff Seidel is a complete, mind-bogglingly horrendous idiot.

Basically, it looks like a little kid designed the outfield wall by scribbling in the sand. This will create lots of challenges for Tigers centerfielder Austin Jackson, who will have to quickly learn how to field balls off the angles and brick wall.

Only 87 home runs (62 by the Giants) have been hit over the rightfield wall and into McCovey Cove. Here's guessing, that Fielder will have a great shot at it.

Before Game 7 on Monday afternoon, there were four kayakers out in McCovey Cove, two normal-size sailboats and one monster sailboat with a giant sign: "I'd still Bust for Posey."

I don't even think Seidel?a well-established, Grade-A idiot of the highest degree?knows what his point is here. Let's wrap this up, please.

Again, let me stress that is a beautiful park, in an amazing setting, and the Giants have great fans.

But something just feels wrong here.

It is against the laws of nature ? it is against the laws of baseball ? to go a baseball game and eat clam chowder and drink Irish coffee while holding a little teddy bear.

The unwritten rules of baseball! We should have seen this coming, the classic crutch for any get-off-my-lawn hack columnist is to come back to the ol' Unwritten Rules. Classic Seidel, idiotic to the end.

Still, I wish we could say that seeing such a weird, argumentative, and flimsy column published in a major daily paper was rare, but this is the Detroit Free Press we're talking about.
