Megrahi says his Lockerbie role exaggerated (Reuters)

TRIPOLI (Reuters) ? Abdel Basset al-Megrahi, the man convicted of the 1988 Lockerbie bombing that killed 270 people, said his role in the attack had been exaggerated and the truth about what really happened would emerge soon.

Megrahi, released from a Scottish prison two years ago because he was suffering from terminal cancer, spoke to Reuters from a bed at his Tripoli home. Looking frail and his breathing labored, he said he had only a few months, at most, to live.

"The facts (about the Lockerbie bombing) will become clear one day and hopefully in the near future. In a few months from now, you will see new facts that will be announced," he told Reuters Television over the pinging of medical monitors.

"The West exaggerated my name. Please leave me alone. I only have a few more days, weeks or months."

Megrahi was found guilty in 2001 of bombing Pan Am flight 103 as it flew to New York from London on December 21, 1988. All 259 people aboard the aircraft were killed and 11 others on the ground in the Scottish town of Lockerbie also died from falling wreckage.

His release on compassionate grounds angered many relatives of the victims, 189 of whom were American, and the Obama administration criticized the decision. A number of U.S. politicians have pressed for his extradition to the U.S.

The United States said on Monday it still believed Megrahi should be behind bars.

"He does seem to have made a miraculous recovery...he never should have been let out of jail," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said. "We continue to believe that the right place for Megrahi is behind bars and we will continue to make that case to the Libyans."

Megrahi, who had served as an intelligence agent during the rule of deposed Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, denied any role in suspected human rights abuses in his home country.

"All my work was administrative. I never harmed Libyans," he said." I didn't harm anyone. I've never harmed anyone in my life."

He called his Lockerbie trial, held in a Dutch court under Scottish jurisdiction, a farce.

"Camp Zeist Court is the smallest place on earth that contains the largest number of liars. I suffered from the liars at Camp Zeist Court more than you can imagine," he said.

UNSHAVEN

Megrahi lay propped at a slight angle in a hospital-style bed surrounded by members of his family. An oxygen tank stood nearby, but he did not use an oxygen mask during the interview.

Unshaven, he wore a checked shirt and had a white headdress wrapped loosely around his head.

Libya's ruling National Transitional Council (NTC) said last week it would work with the Scottish government over the possible involvement of others in the 1988 bombing, an attack the country's new rulers are eager to distance themselves from.

The NTC had previously called the case closed and said any probe would not involve Megrahi, who had been serving a life sentence. NTC head Mustafa Abdel Jalil has previously claimed to have evidence of Gaddafi's involvement in the bombing.

A second defendant, Al-Amin Khalifa Fhimah, was cleared of murder charges in the proceedings.

A Scottish government spokesman said Megrahi was "an extremely sick man, dying of terminal prostate cancer."

He was released in 2009 by the Scottish authorities because it was thought he had only months to live.

"He was tried and convicted under Scottish jurisdiction by international agreement - ministers do not doubt his guilt. As has always been the case, the Lockerbie atrocity remains an open investigation, given that al-Megrahi was convicted on the basis that he did not act alone," he said.

"Scotland's Justice Secretary granted compassionate release to Mr al-Megrahi according to the due process of Scots Law, and without regard to any other factor," he added.

In his interview, Megrahi said that Jim Swire, the father of one of the victims of the bombing and who has disputed the court's findings, maintained contact with him.

"The day before yesterday, Dr. Swire sent me an email to tell me that there is a new medicine. He is trying to help me. He told me how to get this medicine."

He said he had little knowledge of the circumstances surrounding Gaddafi's overthrow and that the armed groups which toppled Gaddafi had invaded his home and mistreated him.

"I don't know anything about February 17th...that's not a question for a sick person," he said, using the term by which many Libyans describe the anti-Gaddafi rebellion. "I hear airplanes overhead every day," he said, referring to NATO planes which have bombed sites in Libya.

"My house has been violated. They smashed the main door and stole my cars."

He said he was being denied medical treatment which he said was stipulated in the deal that saw him returned from Scotland to Libya.

"I was treated badly when I came back. During the latest incidents, especially in the last month, I have a shortage of all my medicines. My doctor tells me to look for medicine like anyone else despite the agreement between us and Britain," he said. "I have four pills left (of one of the medications)."

"I want to die in my house, among my family. I hope to God that I will see my country united, with no fighting or war. I hope the bloodshed will stop in Libya. I wish all the best for my country."

Lockerbie resident Sarah Lawson, 87, who still lives in Sherwood Crescent where debris from the plane demolished houses and killed 11 residents, questioned whether the truth about the bombing would ever emerge.

"I don't think he did it...somebody else did it. Maybe he had a job to do and he had to do it otherwise it would've cost him his life," she told Reuters by telephone.

Megrahi's release was conditional on his agreement to make himself available to talk by telephone or video link with officials from the criminal justice department of East Renfrewshire, an area of Scotland where Megrahi's family lived while he was imprisoned.

"We continue to monitor him regularly and he has not breached any of the conditions imposed on him as part of that license," a spokesman for East Renfrewshire council said.

The British Foreign Office had no immediate comment.

Human-wildlife conflicts have increased in the United States!

Human-wildlife conflicts and economic / statistical number of NWCO s / federal, state and local agencies ? White Paper

September 2007

o1. Complex problem

? Implementation of gambling laws for the protection and scientific management of wild animals had their desired effect: the wild populations rose to its highest level seen since the colonial period. These wild stocks on the rise, an unexpected turnConsequences as a movement of wild animals in urban areas has begun and wildlife damage increased. (Brandt 1997)

o2. Economic impact on families

? reported 61% of the 100 largest cities in the United States, that they or their family had a problem with one or more species of wild animals last year and has an average loss of $ 73 damages.

Almost half (42%) of all urban households reportedtries to solve a wildlife damage problem in the previous year and imported goods worth $ 38 in the trial. Unfortunately, 52% reported that their efforts do not solve the problem were successful.

If these results to the 60 million households in major cities United States (160 million) are projected, suffered urban households $ 4.4 billion per year trying to load the animal world, despite spending $ 2.3 billion and 268 million hours to avoid these problems (Conover1997b).

If we conservatively value of people's time, the minimum wage (6.15 U.S. dollars in 2000), the overall labor costs will be $ 1.6 billion. Thus the total cost of wildlife damages (actual, the more time and money spent to avoid the problem) for urban residents is about $ 8300000000th

An additional 34 million households (92 million inhabitants) live in small towns, villages and rural areas. (U.S. Bureau of the Census 1992). Because wildlife populations arebe higher in rural areas, I suppose, that these families suffer from the problems at least as much animals and people live in cities. This could mean that the total annual cost of wildlife damage to farm families (more time spent on the prevention of the problem) would amount to $ 4.2 billion conservatively.

Total economic losses due to damage wildlife in the United States

?Damage to cars, airplanes, land, timber and household expenses 22000000000 $ per year. These figures do not include economic losses due to diseases or injuries caused by wild animals.

Estimated number of operators Nuisance Wildlife Control (NWCO of)

? E 'was estimated that there are 10,000 NWCO in the United States, but it should be noted that this figure includes the time needed only partially and occasionally. Circumspect It is estimated that there are 5,000 full-time operators. This is equivalent to 1 per 60 400 inhabitants in NWCO. (Based on 2007 Census Bureau population)

Government agencies ? Fish and Game Department, Animal Control, Police, Local Police and Sherriff

? not to engage government agencies in general in Human-Wildlife Conflict Resolution. These agencies are short, untrained and uninsured for> Wildlife control activities. Animal control agencies have the legal authority to deal with wildlife problems.

Federal ? Animal Plant Health Inspection Service

? This duty includes basic education agencies. Wildlife management activities are mainly linked to agriculture.

Summary

? Wildlife conflicts continued to grow in the United States, while federalState agencies and local budgets continue to shrink. With the current number of NWCO, there remains a shortage of workers to the current needs of wildlife monitoring to fulfill. Assistance to the private sector, especially the rural poor. Private NWCO requires more than wildlife and human populations continue to rise. It is not uncommon for a client, a waiting period of 2-3 weeks for the service during the scheduled time of the wildlife living along to a lack of controlNWCO is.

US general: al-Qaida in Iraq severely weakened (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Al-Qaida's affiliate in Iraq has been severely weakened by a money squeeze, internal squabbling, a shortage of volunteer suicide bombers and more effective Iraqi efforts to snatch the terror group's foreign recruits when they slip across the border from Syria, a senior U.S. general said Thursday.

Maj. Gen. David Perkins, commander of the Army's 4th Infantry Division and of all U.S. forces in northern Iraq, said al-Qaida has suffered a "dramatic decrease" in local and foreign fundraising, to the point where members of the group are fighting over shrinking pieces of the financial pie.

"We are seeing, instead of foreign aid coming in, in large amounts, they're resorting to what I would call extortion, black marketing, robbery of jewelry stores, things like that," Perkins told reporters in a video link to the Pentagon from his base in Tikrit. "And it's devolving more into almost gang mafia-type activities. ... And so they are starting to, in some instances, turn against each other, which from our point of view is a good sign."

Northern Iraq, and particularly the city of Mosul and the Tigris River valley area, has for years been a hub for al-Qaida in Iraq.

Now, with U.S. forces preparing to leave Iraq, al-Qaida has become more of a criminal enterprise than a terrorist group, Perkins said. He asserted that U.S.-trained Iraqi army and police forces are getting better at using intelligence leads to capture and otherwise contain al-Qaida elements.

"Where we see that manifest itself is a dramatic decrease in numbers of attacks, especially your typical al-Qaida signature attacks, spectacular attacks, ones with a large amount of suicide folks involved," he said. "We see now more vehicle-borne explosive devices that are parked and detonated versus being driven and detonated, which means they're having a hard time getting people who are true believers to actually be the suicide folks."

Perkins said he has seen no clear evidence that the decline in numbers of foreign fighters crossing the border from Syria is connected to a 6-month-old anti-government uprising in Syria. He said Iraqi security forces have gotten better at border protection, in part because they are sharing intelligence more effectively.

Perkins also said that most of the 5,000 U.S. troops based in northern Iraq will be gone by the end of October. All U.S. forces are to leave by the end of the year, under a 2008 U.S.-Iraq agreement, although the two sides are now discussing the possibility of keeping some troops in Iraq beyond 2011.

In a reminder that northern Iraq remains dangerous, a U.S. soldier was killed there Thursday. Perkins offered no details of the death beyond saying the soldier was preparing to go out on an operation when he was killed by "indirect fire," meaning a rocket or mortar attack. It was the first U.S. combat death in Iraq since July.

Killer cantaloupe, scary sprouts ? what to do? (AP)

MILWAUKEE ? Avoid foreign produce. Wash and peel your fruit. Keep it refrigerated. None of these common tips would have guaranteed your safety from the deadliest food outbreak in a decade, the one involving cantaloupes from Colorado.

Whether it's sprouts or spinach, turkey or hamburger; whether the government conducted double, triple or quadruple inspections, the truth is that no food will ever be completely free of risk.

And a few foods have become so risky that certain people such as children, pregnant women and the elderly may do best to avoid them altogether until growers and the government figure out how to make them safer, some food experts say.

An unappetizing fact: Although the current cantaloupe outbreak has been tied to just one farm in Colorado, it's at least the 19th outbreak involving that melon since 1984. It's also the first one caused by listeria, a germ that actually likes to be in the refrigerator and thrives in this fruit, which cannot be cooked unless you want to eat melon mush.

Listeria also prompted a California farm to recall bags of chopped romaine lettuce on Thursday because of possible contamination, though no illnesses have been reported. The greens from Salinas-based True Leaf Farms went to an Oregon distributor and possibly at least two other states ? Washington and Idaho.

So what should you do if you see cantaloupe on a salad bar or at the grocery store? Can you be sure all of the tainted stuff has been pulled from the market, since the last bad melons were shipped on Sept. 10? What if no one knows where the cantaloupe was grown?

"If the store can't tell them or the restaurant can't tell them, I would not buy it at all," said Chris Waldrop, director of the Food Policy Institute at the Consumer Federation of America.

Laura Anderko, a Georgetown University public health expert, went a step further.

"Honestly, as a nurse, I would tell people don't eat the cantaloupe until this thing resolves itself," she said. "This stuff happens because our system is not as tight as it needs to be."

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which has confirmed 13 deaths and 72 illnesses in the outbreak so far, has not told people to stop buying cantaloupe. However, the CDC and the Food and Drug Administration cannot even say where all of the tainted melon went, because it was sold and resold to many distributors across the nation.

"When in doubt, throw it out," is the CDC's advice to consumers who have any cantaloupe whose origins they can't determine.

"Even if the cantaloupe is gone, you need to wash the drawer or shelf it may have been on" to make sure other foods don't become contaminated, said Caroline Smith DeWaal, director of food safety at the Center for Science in the Public Interest.

Beyond that, each outbreak brings fresh lessons on how to make produce safer. And while some of these things aren't guarantees, they can cut the odds you'll lose at the food safety lottery.

Some new tips food experts offered Thursday:

? Shop more often and consume fresh fruits and vegetables within a few days. This gives germs less chance to multiply and gives you more nutrients from your food, too.

? Don't just wash a melon. Scrub it under running water to rinse off any dislodged germs, and let it dry. If you cut it while it's still wet, "you may be sliding the pathogens more easily from the outside to the inside" on the knife, DeWaal said.

? Keep the fridge cold, 40 degrees or lower. Higher than that can let germs grow.

? Don't get a false sense of security if you buy organic produce. That just means less pesticide ? not necessarily fewer germs.

? Consider dropping especially risky foods from your diet. Bean sprouts are not safe for children, pregnant women or people with weak immune systems and certain diseases, but that doesn't mean they're OK for everyone else, said Michael Doyle, a microbiologist who heads the University of Georgia's Center for Food Safety.

Doyle also consults for a lot of food companies, including a major spinach producer that sought help after outbreaks involving that vegetable. He has chaired a food safety advisory council for McDonald's for many years.

"I don't eat sprouts at all," he said. If harmful bacteria are in the seeds "they grow in the sprouting process, and there's nothing to kill them unless you cook them."

You can go too far with this, though. Even Dr. Robert Tauxe, the CDC's top food-germ sleuth, once confessed over lunch that he refused to live in fear, and that there were only a few foods he absolutely wouldn't eat, such as raw oysters and unpasteurized milk.

Beyond that, safe handling and cooking can generally keep most foods safe, he said.

The big picture is important, said Robert Gravani, a food scientist at Cornell University.

A gazillion pounds of produce are consumed each day, and only a tiny fraction cause problems, he said.

"I have a hard time saying, `Don't eat produce,' because of all of the health benefits," he said. "Everything we do has some degree of risk attached to it."
