Doug Ross: Conservative Bloggers Should Moderate GOP Debates

An excellent idea.

I couldn?t agree more.

Everyone on the right is tired of Republican debates moderated by liberal activists masquerading as journalists.

Doug Ross hit the wall here?

So the chief political operative for a disgraced, impeached ex-president is the right guy to moderate a Republican debate?

And with America?s debt surpassing 100% of GDP ? which makes us, officially, a debtor nation; with Iran threatening to close the Strait of Hormuz; with China gearing up for war; with Islamists rising throughout the Middle East; with rating agencies threatening to further downgrade the United States; George Stephanapolous wants to discuss banning contraception? Really?

No, that?s the perverted worldview of a manic progressive, attempting to tar Republicans as religious throwbacks through his interrogatories.

Here?s a solution: we need a conservative bloggers? debate.

I nominate Ace of Spades, Andrew Breitbart, Ed Morrissey, Erick Erickson, Jim Hoft, John Hawkins, Michelle Malkin and Glenn Reynolds.

I can guaran-damn-tee that their combined audiences dwarf Stephanapolous? ratings.

So who do we have to sue to pull this off?

How do we make this happen? Glenn?

Acer's Aspire S5 Ultrabook Comes In As the Ultra-Thinnest—For Now [Acer]

Acer's first Ultrabook, the Aspire S5, also happens to be one of the first of what will certainly be a tidal wave of Ultrabooks announced at CES this year. It's just 15mm thick at its largest point, and weighs in at less than 3 pounds. But it's probably only going to hold that "world's thinnest" title for a few hours until the Ultrabook floodgates open. Tick tock. More »

Pac-12 Game Of The Week: California @ Oregon State

We may only be two games into the conference season, but tonight will give us a good feel on who is a contender and who is a pretender in the Pac-12. The game that most fits that bill will take place tonight in Corvallis when 2-0 California meets 0-2 Oregon State. For the visiting Golden Bears, a loss won?t make or break their chances at a conference crown, but it could be listed as a bad loss on a tournament r?sum? that is sure to be on the bubble come March. On the other side is Oregon State, where a victory is crucial after being swept in Washington last week. For the Beavers to have any shot at an at-large into the NCAA Tournament, a 3-1 record over their next four games is a must. So of course, they could lose tonight and win their next three, but that is highly unlikely?as Stanford and Arizona are on the horizon. Despite this being one of the best games of the week and boasting multiple talented players on each side, the game will not be televised or webcast. That means the winner may get a little national attention just from being on ESPN?s bottom line, but the loser would likely fall from the nation?s radar for a LONG time.

Junior guard Jared Cunningham leads Oregon State with 17 PPG (credit: Sports Chat Place)

For the Beavers to get a win tonight they will need to rely on their defense. They have played three teams this season that are at Cal?s level offensively, and so far they are 1-2. The one win came against Texas, a game in which the Beavers were able to get out on multiple fast breaks after stepping into the Longhorn passing lanes. The Beavers would score a total of 100 points in a game where they actually didn?t shoot the ball that well, but they got the win because of their great defense. That?is what they need to do here if they want to have a chance.

When the Beavers are on offense look for the Golden Bear defense to key in on Ahmad Starks and Roberto Nelson. Simply put, this game is going to come down to how well those two are shooting from behind the arc.?Starks is averaging 13 PPG, and while?his hot and cold shooting may make Beaver fans cringe at times, the Beavers need him to be shooting the rock well. Nelson is another story. Coach Craig Robinson likes to bring Nelson off the bench as soon as the Beavers need a spark, which is usually in the first five minutes. Against athletically challenged teams like Illinois-Chicago is where Nelson has his best games. He is a very spotty (at best) type of player, and only gets really hot when he is alone in a corner or a slow defense forgets about him. So if whoever is assigned to Nelson (most likely Justin Cobbs or Jorge Gutierrez) can stick with him on the perimeter, it will force Nelson to drive and dish instead of taking his own shot.

When California is on offense, the Beavers will deploy mainly man-to-man pressure. The man-to-man has been?good?for creating steals that lead to fastbreaks, but the truth is, it has done more harm than good for the Beavers. Both Washington and Washington State were able to exploit this defense by sending everyone but a shooter into or near the key. When the Beavs would pack it in, they would bring all five guys to help on a big man, usually Aziz?N?Diaye or Brock Motum. The?said big men would then kick the ball out to an open sharpshooter and bam, you can see how the Beavers lost these games. If the Beavers have?addressed this problem in practice this week, it?s going to be tough for guys like Cobbs and Allen Crabbe to get good looks from behind the three-point line. But if the Beavs haven?t fixed it, it?s going to be a long night in Corvallis.

Google demotes Chrome in search results after violating own paid links policy

Google's search team has demoted the main page for its Chrome browser for at least 60 days after being accused of violating its own policy against paid links with a marketing campaign designed to boost Chrome's popularity. Searching Google for "chrome" no longer brings up www.google.com/chrome in the first page of results, but the first result is still a guide from Google on how to download and install Chrome. Reporter Danny Sullivan of Search Engine Land notes that searching for "browser" also no longer brings up the Chrome home page among the top results, whereas it was previously the second result after Firefox.

"We?ve investigated and are taking manual action to demote?and lower the site?s PageRank for a period of at least 60 days," Google said in a statement supplied to Search Engine Land.

The action was taken because Google sponsored hundreds of blog posts that seem to be little more than advertisements for Chrome. Google blamed Unruly Media, the advertising firm that ran the campaign on Google's behalf, saying in a statement supplied to AllThingsD that ?Google never agreed to anything more than online ads. We have consistently avoided paid sponsorships, including paying bloggers to promote our products, because these kind of promotions are not transparent or in the best interests of users. We?re now looking at what changes we need to make to ensure that this never happens again.?

The Google statement quoted by Search Engine Land also notes that "While Google did not authorize this campaign, and we can find no remaining violations of our webmaster guidelines, we believe Google should be held to a higher standard, so we have taken stricter action than we would against a typical site."

If you're curious, searching Microsoft's Bing for "browser" doesn't bring up Chrome in the regular results, but it does come up as a clearly-marked advertising link. Searching Bing for chrome brings up the Chrome home page first.

Demi Moore fears being unlovable (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Actress Demi Moore, who recently ended her six-year marriage to Ashton Kutcher, says her worst fear is finding she is "not worthy of being loved".

In an interview conducted just one week after Moore filed for divorce in November, the "Ghost" star opened up to her friend, British photographer Amanda De Cadenet, for the February edition of Harper's Bazaar magazine.

Moore, 49, did not directly address her split with Kutcher, the 33-year-old star of television comedy "Two and A Half Men." The marriage foundered after a San Diego woman went public about a brief fling she had with Kutcher.

But in a wide-ranging conversation with De Cadenet about insecurities, Moore said; "What scares me is that I'm going to ultimately find out at the end of my life that I'm really not lovable, that I'm not worthy of being loved. That there's something fundamentally wrong with me...and that I wasn't wanted here in the first place."

The marriage was Moore's third, and the 16-year age difference between her and Kutcher made them the subject of constant media attention.

Moore added that freedom for her meant, "Letting go of the outcome. Truly being in the moment. Not reflecting on the past. Not projecting into the future. That's freedom. Not caring more about what other people think than what you think. That's freedom.

"To not be defined by your wounds. Somebody wrote something to me that said, 'Don't let your wounds make you become someone you're not.' That's really powerful. And not taking life too seriously," she told De Cadenet.

The actress, who has recently lost weight and alarmed media by her thin appearance, also said she has had a "love-hate" relationship with her body but that now she accepted it.

"When I'm at the greatest odds with my body, it's usually because I feel my body's betraying me, whether that's been in the past, struggling with my weight and feeling that I couldn't eat what I wanted to eat, or that I couldn't get my body to do what I wanted it to do.

"I think I sit today in a place of greater acceptance of my body, and that includes not just my weight but all of the things that come with your changing body as you age to now experiencing my body as extremely thin -- thin in a way that I never imagined somebody would be saying to me, "You're too thin, and you don't look good."

Moore and De Cadenet are executive producers of a new TV interview series called "The Conversation" that is due to premiere on cable channel Lifetime later in 2012.

H-ASIA December 31, 2011 CFP Big Dams in Asia, Africa and the Middle East: workshop Berlin; 3 June 2012 ********************************************************** From H_Announce Big Dams in Asia, Africa and the Middle East: workshop Location: Germany Call for Papers Date: 2012-02-03 Date Submitted: 2011-12-22 Announcement ID: 190727 Big Dams: Investigating their temporal and spatial politics in Africa, the Middle East and Asia Zentrum Moderner Orient, Berlin, June 1st 2012 This workshop, to be held at Zentrum Moderner Orient, Berlin on June 1st 2012, seeks to explore the spatial and temporal dimensions of big dam projects in Africa, Asia and the Middle East . Big dam building projects are often associated with the post-war high modernist moment, but they have never ceased to proliferate, particularly in the global South. Costs and benefits of these enormous projects are hotly contested. Hydro-electric dams have stood as symbols of human ingenuity, signs of progress, and imposing greeners of the desert (McCully 2001) and ?temples? of the modern nation-state, as Nehru put it for India. On the other hand, displaced populations, environmental activists, tax payers and creditors cast serious doubts on the justification and means of building large dams (Ghosh 2006; Roy 1998; Scudder 2005). As highly loaded symbols of state power and as sites which incorporate specific practices of ?governmentality?, dam building projects bring together actors, materialities and discourses from very different spatial scales: local activists and populations interact with national and regional governments, international organizations, or globally operating companies. They are also sites which focus representations of heterogeneous temporalities: notions such as progress, modernisation, development and securing future wellbeing are contrasted with the loss of ?traditional? ways of life, of ancient environmental balances, of cultural and archaeological traces of the past. With a view to a subsequent publication, we invite papers on empirical case studies from various disciplinary backgrounds that address any of the following questions: - Can we find typical patterns of cost-benefit analysis by different actors? Do these differ in any way from those relating to other large- scale modernisation projects, such as urban (re)building, highway construction, etc.? - What are the spatial scales of social belonging invoked in the contestations of dam building projects, e.g. ?small? and marginal communities having to sacrifice for the ?greater? (national or regional) good? - How are these discourses temporalized, how do they articulate ideas of ?modernisation?, ?progress?, ?backwardness? and ?tradition?? How do the different social actors deal with processes of erasure and submerging sites of past experiences and memories in the name of the future? And how do governments, citizens and corporate investors deal with historical successes or mistakes associated with dams? We invite abstracts of no more than 500 words by Friday 3rd February 2012, to be sent to the conference organizers at feaucroj@hu-berlin.de, langekat@rz.hu-berlin.de, katrin.bromber@rz.hu-berlin.de. Limited funding is available to help cover accommodation and travel expenses (please indicate where needed).
