Spotify to lay down beats for Ford (update: it's a hack)

It's only been two months since Spotify made its stateside debut, and it's already getting in bed with an American staple. No, it hasn't struck a deal with Beyonce or Britney, but the fine folks at Autoblog are reporting that the streaming music service will make its way into vehicles sporting the Ford SYNC AppLink system "in the near future." Details are otherwise vague, but we'd be interested to hear how the outfit's "exclusive automotive advertising partner" feels about the deal.

Update: Turns out this partnership isn't of the official kind. The folks at Spotify were actually on hand at the TechCrunch Disrupt Hack-a-Thon to show off "how easy it is for developers to create voice-enabled smartphone apps using the SYNC API." Looks like Chevy's got nothing to be jealous about after all.

tap into spousal influence - Networking Ahead for Business

Are you married? What does your partner do for a living?

Does this seem like an appropriate question to ask a networking contact or is it too personal? I?m going to suggest that you begin to ask about people?s personal lives when you network.

One of the goals of networking is to grow your sphere of influence: to add more and more connections and to develop many of them into mutually beneficial relationships to enhance your business and personal success and well-being (and that of other people).

Everyone you meet in the networking process has a uniquely different network than you do. If you are effective at building trust and connection with them, they might just open up their network to you.? The largest value of this new connection may lie not in the person in front of you, but the people that they connect you to. Their people?and that includes their spousal partner.

There are fewer connections as strong as married couples. They live together, sleep together, eat together and hopefully love each other. Spouses have influence over and equity with each other. If one of them likes you and wants to help you in networking, they may be talking about you to their spouse at home. Let?s hope it?s positive talk.

A recent eye-opener

I had been working on making inroads with a prestigious, regionally-based accounting firm with multiple offices in Connecticut and Massachusetts. I was excited when one of my speaking engagements led to an introductory meeting with the Chief Marketing Officer of this firm. That successful first meeting led to the request for proposal for a series of training seminars on business networking skill development for their associates.

As I was working on the proposal, I received an email from a good networking friend Judy who told me that her husband came home from work that day and told her that the CMO of the firm reported to the partners that they were going to be working with me on this professional development initiative. I had never met Judy?s husband before, but he was very familiar with me because Judy had mentioned my name enthusiastically to him on several occasions.

What I didn?t know was that Judy?s husband worked for this particular accounting firm and that he held a very senior position there. I never bothered to ask about her husband.

Judy took the initiative to reach out to the CMO and give her endorsement of me. She told him in a hand-written note that I would be perfect for the firm. She did this on her own accord without prompting from me. Judy?s email motivated me to write a winning proposal ? helping me to visualize a successful outcome.

It is ironic that me, the networking maven and author of the book Networking Ahead for Business, never bothered to ask Judy questions about her family life. I knew that Judy was a person of influence and connection in the business community. I never asked her about her husband. Too bad, as I could have potentially accelerated my new business development cycle.

I told this story with Judy and asked her permission to share it with you as a weekly networking tip. She agreed and also gave some additional insight with me on the topic.

?When you are out to dinner with another couple or when you are at a business dinner or event, use your conversational skills to get people talking. People love to talk about themselves. In this social setting, you are allowed to ask about and learn about their family life and personal interests. It?s not like a formal interview, where you can?t talk about anything personal.?

Your Networking Goal for the Week

When you are networking with other people this week, be sure to include the question ?what does your spouse/partner do for a living?? If the spouse is a stay-at-home mom/dad, inquire what interests and organizations he/she belongs to. Consider the possibility of how you could help your contact?s spouse through your network and resources. Share information about your spouse/partner when you network. Be on the look out for new connections for your better half.? For your closer contacts, consider doing a couples dinner outing or inviting them over to your home for a meal. Get to know the partner in addition to your original networking contact. This could enrich and extend your sphere of influence and allow you to deepen your relationships.

6 Public Speaking Tips To Improve Your Conferences | Business 2 ...

Public Speaking Tips for Association and Nonprofit LeadersHere at Socious, not only do we help people get the most out of their event management software, we also help them succeed in other ways. Our speaker management system can help you manage your speakers and sessions of all sizes and scope. However, if your presenters don?t offer effective, organized, and compelling messaging, your conference will suffer.

As a professional speaking coach, I am often asked to impart some words of wisdom to someone preparing to get up and speak in front of a group of people. Though this guidance is rooted in common sense, here are six professional public speaking tips that the nonprofit and corporate leaders at your conference can use to engage their audiences:

1. Know Your Topic Better Than Anyone in the Room

The first, and by far the most important, thing one must do is know the topic up, down and sideways.? All of the rest of what someone like me can impart, while important, can only be built on a solid foundation. That foundation is knowledge of content. The more confident you are about what you are going to say, the more solid and confident you will be, no matter your level of public speaking experience.? I call it ?trickle up confidence?.

When preparing for a presentation, it?s very easy to get caught up in details like worrying about how you?re going to stand, how you are going to gesture, projecting properly, appearance, and looking and sounding authoritative.? These are all very important items and worthy of attention, but to borrow an old clich?, ?don?t put the cart before the horse?. Be an expert on topic first.

2. Prepare Your Content Like a Pro

Start at the beginning. When putting together your content, remember that different things work for different people. If you already have a method that works, use it. If you don?t, maybe mine can help.

First, I put together a pseudo outline that I call ?free outlining?.? It?s a lot like ?free writing? except it?s only comprised of ideas and bullet points.? After, I completed my free-outline, I tweak it until it?s somewhat organized.? My next step is to actually free-write using my free-outline as a reference.? Finally, I turn my writing into a loose essay.? This is what I will use as the basis for my speech.

3. Really Know Your Audience

Knowing your information fully is the cornerstone of any successful presentation, but a very close second is being able to communicate it properly and with clarity.? There are two items to keep in mind when focusing on the clarity of your message.
First, you must know your audience.? Are you using jargon that is above their heads, or speaking to them in a manner that is too fundamental?? Keeping their attention is extremely important. This is very difficult if either they have no idea what you are saying, or if you are telling them things they already know. Make sure you are speaking to them on their level.

4. Be Thorough Yet Succinct

The second item relating to clarity is a little more complex, but can be boiled down to the following. Don?t be redundant and long-winded.? An audience?s attention span, unless they are being entertained, is quite short.? Make sure that you spend no more time than necessary covering what needs to be covered. Your free outlining and free writing will be an asset helping you to keep track of what you need to cover and how deep it?s being covered.

5. Practice and Practice, Then Practice Again

When you have finally reached the point where you have a well-defined speech that addresses the needs of your audience, the last thing to do is practice.? Practice, practice, practice.? Unfortunately, it helps to practice a lot, and it really helps to do it aloud.? Sorry, but it?s true.

So, you know where to start; at the beginning with a solid foundation of knowledge of your subject.? The greatest asset you have and the greatest confidence you can get is from the organized knowledge of your topic.? The next most important factor is the clarity of your message.? Make sure you are brief but thorough and that you are talking ?to? your audience, not below or above them.? Also, did I mention the need to practice?

6. Speaking is a Privilege

Finally, don?t forget why you are there in the first place.? You have been asked, or told, to do this not because you look great in Dockers, but because someone somewhere thinks that you have something important to tell others.? That?s a compliment!? Treat it as such.

mLogic mDock extends your MacBook ports, steals your Thunder(bolt)

If you're trying to make a name for yourself in the incredibly crowded portable storage space, you can innovate and create something totally awesome, or you can do this. The mDock from mLogic is an external hard drive, port extender and port blocker all rolled into one pricey coffin-like chamber of fail. $219 will net you an eternal resting place for 500 gigs of data, while $299 ups the ante to an entire terabyte. Plus, with a pair of front-facing USB ports, you can add a third-party portable storage yokel for the less-than-princely sum of 50 bucks. If you haven't already gathered, the mDock is designed for mMacbook Pros, but there's also the iMac-mountable mBack (curiously not the iBack), designed with Apple's familiar desktop flavor in mind. That variant is slightly more affordable, with pricing ranging from $169 for 1TB to $349 for 3TB, but you'll forgo the dock-like USB hub and headphone jack. There's no word on when to expect these life-changing devices in stores, but it's never too early to dust off the mChair iChair and park yourself on 5th Ave.

Update: As pointed out by many in the comments most ports that are blocked by the mDock are replicated on the silver brick, including the Magsafe. The only restriction appears to be a lack of pass-through for Thunderbolt, but you do get a mini DisplayPort for hooking up external monitors. We've added one more pic after the break.

Rocket man: Shelby pushes for NASA (Politico)

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. ? Republican Sen. Richard Shelby has been one of Barack Obama?s most persistent critics, accusing the president of putting the country on a road to financial ruin with deficits as far as the eye can see.

But his demands to slash government programs tend to stop at the Alabama state line.

Here in his home state, Shelby has been pressuring the Obama administration to spend billions to build what could become the world?s biggest rocket at NASA?s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville ? a government project that would affect thousands of jobs, benefit a network of powerful industry interests and fill a major void at the agency after the collapse of the Bush-era Constellation initiative and the end of the space shuttle program in July.

Behind the scenes, Shelby has staked out Alabama?s turf against other states, attacking the administration for sending $340 million to Florida rather than to the Marshall agency and pushing NASA to put out bids for a key rocket engine, a move that could help an Alabama company at the expense of one in Utah. A provision he authored ended up directing $215 million to the scrapped Constellation program earlier this year, and he?s been a prolific earmarker, sending $185 million for a range of projects in Huntsville in the past few years, nearly half of which went to NASA programs.

The fight for the new project illustrates Washington?s larger struggle over reining in the deficit while trying to deal with high unemployment, proving once again that powerful senators can save government jobs back home, regardless of the anti-spending rhetoric coming out of Congress.

It also raises this question: Will lawmakers be willing to sacrifice programs and projects in their backyards to help pay down the debt during Congress?s fall budget fight?

When it comes to the rocket project, lawmakers whose states are major centers for the aerospace industry answer with a definitive ?no.?

Shelby says it?s not just about dollars going to his state ? it?s about moving forward with a rocket project that will ultimately benefit the country, resurrect the struggling manned space program and lead to the creation of technologies that could change the world.

The rocket, if successful, could send Americans to the moon for the first time since 1972 and to places where no human has ever gone ? and potentially even to Mars, raising profound implications for mankind.

?This will help promote American prestige and competitiveness when we need it most,? Shelby said. ?As such, I believe this is a wise and worthwhile investment.?
