Here's a prediction, for those of you with a soft spot for culinary fortune-telling: 2013 will be the Year of the Goat. Of course, goat is a staple in many parts of the world, but it's been uncommon on menus catering to white-bread American tastes. Not for much longer.

The buzz is already starting ? goat is creeping onto menus that never would have featured it in the past. In Santa Monica, Tar & Roses offers an entire meal of wood-fired goat. Dining clubs this summer in L.A. roasted whole goats for delighted participants. In other parts of the country, too, taste-makers are organizing goat dinners, hoping to bring this underappreciated meat to their customers.

Diners and cooks looking to get a jump start on the impending Age of Goat ought to head to Gish Bac, a modest Oaxacan restaurant in Mid-City, and partake of the goat barbacoa, which is served on weekends only. Owners David Padilla and Maria Ramos cook goat in the Oaxacan style: chili-roasted for hours and hours in a pit. It comes to the table swimming in meaty juices, red from chili and tomato. After trying it wrapped in warm, fresh tortillas with a little cabbage slaw, you'll see that American chefs are late to the goat game.

Padilla and Ramos are continuing a tradition of barbacoa that began in their hometown of Tlacolula, Oaxaca. "Maria is the third generation of the family who made one of the best goat barbecues in Tlalcolua," Padilla says. After moving to L.A. 20 years ago, they began cooking for family and friends ? "barbecue, because that's our specialty" ? and, at the urging of folks who wanted access to their barbacoa more regularly, they opened Gish Bac in 2010.

It's a small, sunny space with yellow walls, tables in front and a lunch counter in back, facing the kitchen. While the restaurant is known for its weekend barbecue items, throughout the week it has plenty of other offerings that are also a step above those at other Oaxacan restaurants.

Come in for breakfast and have eggs scrambled with the fantastic house-made chorizo, or try one of the memelas con carne ? a thick, soft masa pancake spread with musky black beans and topped with your choice of meat; the cesina, or thin slices of pork, which have been marinated and cooked, is particularly satisfying. In fact, just because this dish is on the breakfast menu doesn't mean you shouldn't order it for lunch as well; the one time I had it at dinner, the masa seemed a touch dried out, but I gobbled it up nonetheless.

There's a fantastic black mole, a swarthy, complex version that's both wicked and soothing. And a "red sauce" that I loved just as much, served over the salsa de chorizo con cesina, a slab of pork with orbs of chorizo on top. The sauce was mellow, lightly spicy and aggressively fruity, thanks to long-cooked fresh tomatoes and the light, almost citrus notes of epazote, a Oaxacan herb.

It's things like that ? a ramp-up of flavors, an unexpected ingredient ? that make Gish Bac exceptional. In the yellow mole empanada with chicken, an empanada that was more like a cheeseless quesadilla, a pert yellow sauce gets an extra kick from hoja santa, which Padilla describes as "Oaxacan mint." The leaf, layered between the tortilla and the meat, gave a pleasantly bitter sting every few bites.

The mole tamales (listed on the weekend-only part of the menu but available all the time) are intensely aromatic; the redolence of the masa paired with that dark mole is a lovely study in the concept of bittersweet.

And on weekends, there's that barbacoa. Go with a friend, and get both the goat and the lamb, which is cooked in avocado leaf and chiles and comes with a bowl of juices for dipping the meat. If you order the lamb, you'll get a plate ahead of the main course, a mixture made of all the lamb offal, deeply spiced and with a kick of dark heat. With a flavor much like a spicy black sausage, it's fantastic scooped up on corn chips.

Seated at a table near the front windows of Gish Bac, the sun setting and the remnants of goat and lamb barbacoa strewn across the table in front of us, a friend reached for another bite of the black beans that come with the tender hunks of lamb.

"There's something about everything here," she said. "Even the beans. They're just special."

When a family brings generations of tradition, craft and expertise to the table, the results are pretty special indeed.

Daina Beth Solomon contributed to this story.

Azeri SOCAR keeps BP as field operator, confirms output plan

BAKU (Reuters) - Azerbaijan's state oil firm signaled on Wednesday BP would keep the operatorship of one of its major foreign projects after Baku recently accused the British oil major of "false promises" following a shortfall in planned output.

The head of Azeri SOCAR said it was working with BP on a plan to keep output roughly flat at the Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli (ACG) field through the end of the decade and was not looking at a change of operator there. It expects production of 33 million metric tonnes (36.37 million tons) this year and in 2013.

"We are preparing a program which envisages oil production at ACG at 33-34 million tonnes in 2015-20," SOCAR chief Rovnag Abdullayev told reporters.

"The contract has not been changed," Abdullayev said, referring to BP's operatorship. "I think there is no need to use possibilities, which are envisaged by this contract."

Falling output at the ACG oilfields, one of BP's largest global projects, raised concerns in the ex-Soviet republic and prompted its president to accuse BP of making false promises.

ACG was expected to produce more than 1 million barrels per day (bpd) after a third phase was completed in 2008. But after hitting 823,000 bpd in 2010, output has fallen, averaging 684,000 bpd in the first half of this year.

Abdullayev said he would have talks with three BP vice-presidents who were visiting Baku. BP confirmed there were negotiations, but declined to elaborate.

"Talks are under way," Tamam Bayatly, BP Azerbaijan's spokeswoman, said. "We will issue a press release later today."

Azerbaijan said BP had promised to sack staff responsible for the output shortfall. BP later made managerial changes in its Azeri office which it said were not related to President Ilham Aliyev's criticism.

Exxon Mobil , Chevron and Statoil also have stakes in the consortium.

Oil executives and diplomats told Reuters last month BP would have to invest billions of dollars more than previously planned in order to slow the output decline. Doing so might not be commercially viable if the PSA is not extended beyond 2024.

SOFTER TONE

Abdullayev's comments on Wednesday made clear that Azerbaijan did not intend to expel BP, the oil-rich country's biggest investor and a major tax payer.

Abdullayev said SOCAR did not believe that BP intentionally perpetrated the decline on its partners, saying there was no "trace or probability" of such wrongdoing.

He added that one of the reasons for the decline was a gas leakage at Azeri field in 2008, which disrupted works at the platform for two months.

"We also could not fulfill output forecast after that accident," Abdullayev said, but added: "BP's tactics after the accident was not managing risks, but avoiding them."

Analysts said BP could be encouraging SOCAR to soften its position on the ACG decline by offering concessions to the Azeri state energy company on other points of contention over their projects in Azerbaijan.

"Negotiations between BP and SOCAR over joint projects in Azerbaijan gave positive results," Ilham Shaban, the head of the Baku-based independent Centre for Oil Research, told Reuters.

They are at odds over delivery and marketing of gas from the next phase of another giant hydrocarbon project, Shah Deniz.

Shaban also suggested BP might be willing to withdraw its request to extend its the production sharing agreement at ACG beyond 2024.

Abdullayev said an extension was not under consideration.

Idiot Detroit Columnist Labels San Francisco A "Strange Baseball Town" Because The Food Is So Amazing

Idiot Detroit Columnist Labels San Francisco A "Strange Baseball Town" Because The Food Is So AmazingFor all the reasons one can/should/better love the spectacle and awesomeness of the World Series, one perpetual risk is that some lazy newspaper columnist will come out and play the "Robinson Crusoe" card, acting like they've suddenly been dropped on a remote Pacific island with no other way of passing the time than by writing, in gripping details, about their strange and foreign surroundings. You know, except with some baseball thrown in.

This year, Jeff Seidel of the Detroit Free Press is more than happy to take up that mantle, penning a column today on how AT&T Park is such a wacky and weird stadium, even though it's apparent he's only ever attended one game in person. Regardless, he has some important views on baseball by the Bay:

SAN FRANCISCO ? Now, the San Francisco Giants have a talented team.

And they play in an amazing, beautiful stadium in an unbelievable setting near San Francisco Bay. It's breathtaking.

But there is no way the Detroit Tigers can lose to these guys. They would never live it down.

First of all, the Giants have a Build-A-Bear Workshop in the stands behind leftfield at AT&T Park. Seriously. How the heck can you lose to a team where the fans can go to a game and stuff a teddy bear and then buy a cute little outfit?

Can you imagine that in Detroit?

Get real.

We'd run them out of town, just because it sounds so wimpy.

You can tell he's serious because each sentence is its own paragraph.

Also, Jeff Seidel is a huge idiot.

And then they have a giant slide, which looks like a McDonald's play station on steroids.

Yeah, the Tigers have a carousel. But carousels are cool.

Solid logic there.

Slides? That's for a playground.

But that's just the start.

AT&T Park isn't a baseball stadium. It's an exotic food court that happens to have a baseball field.

Few San Francisco fans would ever lower themselves to eating a beer and a brat. Or even a coney.

I've attended maybe 50 games at Pac Bell/SBC/AT&T Park in my 10 years in the Bay Area, and I've seen fans (a) drinking beer and (b) eating brats at every single game.

Also, Jeff Seidel is a clueless idiot.

They sit there ? decked out in orange and black, waving orange towels ? watching their Giants while eating garlic fries, crab sandwiches on grilled sourdough bread, clam chowder, fried calamari, sweet potato fries with cinnamon and chipotle sprinkle, and clove garlic chicken sandwiches.

Others can be found drinking margaritas, Irish coffee and an assortment of wines.

Can you imagine eating clam chowder and drinking wine in the bleachers at old Tiger Stadium?

You'd get thrown out on your tush. Just because.

Ah, more thinly veiled code words from Seidel, comparing big/bad/tough Detroit with "wimpy" San Francisco. Classy.

It bears repeating, I feel, that Jeff Seidel is a mammoth, otherworldly idiot.

Outside of AT&T Park, there are palm trees lit up with Christmas lights.

Seriously?

Now, I know they rarely get snow here. But that's just wrong, unless it's at a Jimmy Buffett concert.

This stadium has other quirks that affect play on the field. Which brings us to rightfield.

The foul pole down the rightfield line is 309 feet, which is going to look pretty tempting to Prince Fielder. Shoot, maybe even to Miguel Cabrera, with all of his opposite-field power.

But the outfield wall is strange and quirky.

It quickly juts out to 365 feet in right and goes to 421 in right-center, before coming back to 399 in center.

It can only be surmised that Jeff Seidel hates things that are interesting.

We can also surmise that Jeff Seidel is a complete, mind-bogglingly horrendous idiot.

Basically, it looks like a little kid designed the outfield wall by scribbling in the sand. This will create lots of challenges for Tigers centerfielder Austin Jackson, who will have to quickly learn how to field balls off the angles and brick wall.

Only 87 home runs (62 by the Giants) have been hit over the rightfield wall and into McCovey Cove. Here's guessing, that Fielder will have a great shot at it.

Before Game 7 on Monday afternoon, there were four kayakers out in McCovey Cove, two normal-size sailboats and one monster sailboat with a giant sign: "I'd still Bust for Posey."

I don't even think Seidel?a well-established, Grade-A idiot of the highest degree?knows what his point is here. Let's wrap this up, please.

Again, let me stress that is a beautiful park, in an amazing setting, and the Giants have great fans.

But something just feels wrong here.

It is against the laws of nature ? it is against the laws of baseball ? to go a baseball game and eat clam chowder and drink Irish coffee while holding a little teddy bear.

The unwritten rules of baseball! We should have seen this coming, the classic crutch for any get-off-my-lawn hack columnist is to come back to the ol' Unwritten Rules. Classic Seidel, idiotic to the end.

Still, I wish we could say that seeing such a weird, argumentative, and flimsy column published in a major daily paper was rare, but this is the Detroit Free Press we're talking about.

Panthers GM Hurney fired after team's 1-5 start

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) ? Marty Hurney admits the "losing environment" for the Carolina Panthers must end. He won't be a part of the effort.

Hurney was fired as general manager Monday, one day after star quarterback Cam Newton expressed his frustration with a 1-5 start. The Panthers have the worst record in the NFC in a season that began with big expectations. But a 19-14 loss to Dallas was Carolina's fourth straight defeat.

Hurney, the GM since 2002, took responsibility for the team's failures.

He spoke to owner Jerry Richardson before Sunday's game and had an inkling he might be fired if the Panthers lost to the Cowboys. He met with Richardson again for two hours after the game Sunday night and was told he was fired on Monday.

"It's simple. We're 1-5. We are 1-3 at home," Hurney said. "We laid in egg in front of the Giants on national TV (a 36-7 loss) and came back the last two weeks and lost against teams we felt like we had a good chance to beat. It can't continue to go this way."

Hurney said he fought for his job, but in the end couldn't blame Richardson. Hurney added he thinks the Panthers need more leadership.

"I think we need somebody to step up in the locker room and take hold," Hurney said. "I think there are people capable of that. I think we need some players to step up and say enough is enough."

Newton experienced virtually no losses before becoming a pro, and he was the 2011 Offensive Rookie of the Year. But this season has been a struggle, and he seemed at a loss for solutions Sunday.

"Well everybody's looking at it, it's not just me," he said. "(We) try to find ways to keep games close and whether it's me, I don't know. Whether it's the coordinator, I don't know ... but we've got to find a way to change that."

The first change came in the front office. Brandon Beane, the team's director of football operations, will handle day-to-day football matters until a new GM is hired. However, coach Ron Rivera said when it comes to personnel decisions he'll have final say in matters for now.

"If a decision has to be made involving the football team and players, it will all stop with me," Rivera said, who added he was surprised by the move.

Rivera said at this point no assistant coaches have been fired, but wouldn't rule that out.

"We're all being evaluated," said Rivera, who was hired by Hurney in 2011.

Hurney doesn't expect Richardson to hire a new general manager until after the season. Richardson could bring in an experienced interim personnel man to evaluate the team.

Hurney said he regrets not winning a Super Bowl in Carolina ? they lost 32-29 to New England for the 2003 title ? and the team's inability to post back-to-back winning seasons.

"I hope this change starts accomplishing the direction to those goals," Hurney said. "I am responsible for everybody in coaching, the players, the scouts and everybody in football operations. After six weeks, we are 1-5 coming off a 6-10 season."

Hurney was general manager when the Panthers went to the Super Bowl and the NFC championship games in the 2003 and 2005 seasons, as well as winning the NFC South in 2008.

"Marty made every effort to bring success to the Panthers and took the team to a Super Bowl and two NFC championship games," Panthers owner Jerry Richardson said. "Unfortunately, we have not enjoyed the success we hoped for in recent years. I have the greatest respect and admiration for Marty and will always appreciate the way he tirelessly served the organization."

Hurney was well liked and respected within the organization, but his personnel decisions in the draft and in free agency were routinely criticized by fans tired of the Panthers' losing ways.

Defensive end Charles Johnson, the team's highest-paid player, said on Twitter: "Marty wasn't the reason we are losing! ... Unbelievable!"

Carolina's last playoff victory came in 2005 when it reached the NFC championship game before losing at Seattle. The Panthers appeared to turn things around in 2008 when they won the NFC South and earned a first-round bye before getting upset 33-13 at home by the Arizona Cardinals. They haven't been back to the playoffs since.

Hurney's philosophy has been to build through the draft and re-sign proven players rather than going after high-priced free agents. But the team wasted a number of high draft picks through the years.

The personnel blunder fans that angered fans most was giving 34-year-old quarterback Jake Delhomme a five-year, $42.5 million contract months after he turned over the ball over six times in the playoff loss to Arizona.

Delhomme started 2009 with a five-turnover game against Philadelphia and was cut after the season. Delhomme cost the Panthers $12 million under the salary cap in 2009 even though he was no longer on the roster.

Eric Shelton, Dwayne Jarrett, Jimmy Clausen and Everette Brown were all drafted in the second round, but failed to meet expectations. Brown, in particular, was a costly choice in 2009 because the Panthers gave up their first-round pick the following year to San Francisco to get him. Brown lasted only two seasons in Carolina.

Hurney also was criticized for giving big contracts to keep the team's core intact following a 2-14 season in 2010.

He did well with first-round draft picks Jordan Gross, Jon Beason, Jonathan Stewart, Chris Gamble and Newton, last year's No. 1 overall pick.

Burglary robbed Nashua woman of chance to honor late mother at wedding

[unable to retrieve full-text content]

Source: www.nashuatelegraph.com --- Tuesday, October 23, 2012
NASHUA ? When a burglar struck her home last week, Anastasia Flemings lost more than some jewelry. The burglar robbed Flemings of her mother?s presence at her Wedding. Sometime during a 12-hour window on Oct. 17, a burglar entered her Middle Street home by smashing through a door, breaking its wooden frame. Flemings believes the burglary occurred during the day while she and her fiance, Paul Snow, were at work. None of the neighbors, including the family who lives upstairs in the two-apartment house, heard anything. The burglar made off with a jewelry box, its contents valued at about $3,000, Flemings said. But it wasn?t the monetary loss that stung. Among the items taken: A 90-year-old Wedding band that first belonged to Flemings? great-grandmother, and then was passed down through the family. Flemings? mother, Virginia Flemings, gave the family heirloom to Anastasia to wear on her Nov. ...

  1. Wake up every morning with the idea that something wonderful is possible today. ? Smiling is a healing energy.? Always find a reason to smile.? It may not add years to your life but will surely add life to your years.? A consistent positive attitude is the cheapest ?fountain of youth.?? You?ve got to dance like there?s nobody watching, love like you?ll never be hurt, sing like there?s nobody listening, and live like it?s heaven on Earth.? Read The How of Happiness.
  2. Celebrate your existence. ? Your mind is the window through which you see the world.? The way to make this the happiest day ever is to think, feel, walk, talk, give, and serve like you are the most fortunate person in the whole world.? Open minded, open hearted, and open handed.? Nothing more is needed.? All is well? and so it is.
  3. Appreciate life?s perfect moments. ? Your life isn?t perfect, but it does have perfect moments.? Don?t let the little things get you down.? You?ve got plenty of reasons to look up at the sky and say, ?Thank you, I will do my best to make this a great day.?? So slow down and pause for a moment to stand in awe of the fact that you are alive, and that you have the ability to rediscover life as the miracle it has always been.
  4. Embrace life?s challenges. ? Uncharted territory in your life is not good or bad, it just is.? Yes, it may rattle your foundation, and you may be tempted to pullback, say you can?t do it, or bail completely.? But these are exactly the conditions that set you up for massive amounts of personal growth.? Each experience through which you pass operates ultimately for your own good.? This is the correct attitude to adopt, and you must be able to see it in this light.? Read Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life.
  5. Become addicted to constant and never-ending self improvement. ? It doesn?t have to be January 1st to give yourself a chance to make the most out of your life.? Every day is a new day to learn, grow, develop your strengths, heal yourself from past regrets, and move forward.? Every day gives you a chance to reinvent yourself, to fine-tune who you are, and build on the lessons you have learned.? It is never too late to change things that are not working in your life and switch gears.? Using today wisely will always help you create a more positive tomorrow.
  6. Live and breathe the truth. ? It?s the most positive, stress-free way to live, because the truth always reveals itself eventually anyway.? So don?t aim to be impressive, aim to be true.? Those who are true are truly impressive.? Being true means having integrity; and integrity is doing the right thing even when you know nobody is watching.
  7. Fill your own bucket. ? Choose to be happy for no reason at all.? If you are happy for a reason, you could be in trouble, because that reason can get taken away from you.? So smile right now because you can right now, and make it a point to fill your own bucket of happiness so high that the rest of the world can?t poke enough holes to drain it dry.
  8. Help the people around you smile. ? Today, give someone one of your smiles.? It might be the only sunshine they see all day.? Sometimes just a single genuine smile or compliment can lift a person?s spirits to new heights.? At the right time, a kind word from a stranger, or unexpected encouragement from a friend, can make all the difference in the world.? Kindness is free, but it?s priceless.? And as you know, what goes around comes around.? Read A New Earth.
  9. Spend time with positive people. ? Life?s way too awesome to waste time with people who don?t treat you right.? So surround yourself with people who make you happy and make you smile.? People who help you up when you?re down.? People who would never take advantage of you.? People who genuinely care.? They are the ones worth keeping in your life.? Everyone else is just passing through.

Indiana Fever captures first WNBA championship

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Tamika Catchings finally won her long-awaited WNBA championship.

She scored 25 points to help the Indiana Fever win their first title with an 87-78 victory over the Minnesota Lynx on Sunday night.

Catchings, who was the MVP of the Finals, averaged 24.8 points in the series, which the Fever won 3-1 over the defending WNBA champions.

''It's been an amazing journey,'' said Catchings tearing up. ''We've had ups and downs, ins and outs."

Erin Phillips added 18 points and eight rebounds while Shavonte Zellous and Briann January each had 15 points.

The Fever won even though No. 2 scorer Katie Douglas missed most of the series with a severely sprained left knee. Douglas checked in with 3.2 seconds left to a loud ovation.

''We sure didn't make it easy,'' Douglas said. ''We went three games with Atlanta, three games with Connecticut. This team played amazing in these Finals.''

Catchings had won three Olympic gold medals and an NCAA championships at Tennessee in 1998, but never a WNBA one. She had been in a position to clinch at home before. The Fever led Phoenix 2-1 in the best-of-five WNBA Finals in 2009, but the Mercury beat the Fever 90-77, took the series back to Phoenix and won the title at home in Game 5.

This time, Catchings took it home with college coach Pat Summitt looking on in the crowd.

Indiana led 63-58 at the end of the third quarter. Minnesota cut Indiana's lead to 70-67 on a jumper by Maya Moore, but Phillips scored on a drive past Moore, got a defensive rebound, then found Shavonte Zellous for a 3-pointer from the left corner to give the Fever a 75-67 lead with 4:58 remaining.

Indiana led by at least five points the rest of the way. A 3-pointer by January gave Indiana an 80-72 lead with 1:18 to play. Minnesota coach Cheryl Reeve was called for a technical with 57.6 seconds remaining, Catchings made the free throw and the Fever took an 81-74 lead. Zellous made two more free throws with 27.2 seconds to play, and Fever fans began celebrating.

Seimone Augustus, Minnesota's leading scorer in the playoffs, was held to eight points on 3-for-21 shooting. Lindsay Whalen scored 22 points and Moore added 16 points for the Lynx, who were vying to become the first team to win consecutive titles since Los Angeles in 2001 and 2002.

Moore picked up her third foul with 6:13 left in the second quarter. Reeve, who was fined for her jacket-tossing tantrum in Game 2, became animated again while disagreeing with the call. As the crowd erupted, Reeve waved hello and made the motion for a technical foul.

This time, Reeve's antics didn't help much as in Game 2, when her team pulled away from a tight contest after her technical foul for a convincing win. Minnesota tied the game three times in the second quarter, but the Fever closed with a 7-2 run, including a 3-pointer by Phillips, to take a 47-42 lead at halftime. Whalen scored 14 points in the first half to keep the Lynx in the game, often scoring on uncontested drives. Minnesota hung tough, despite Augustus shooting 2-for-13 in the first half.

Indiana started the second half on a 9-4 run, including two buckets by Catchings, to take a 56-46 lead.

Minnesota came right back. A driving layup by Moore cut Indiana's lead to 56-54 and forced the Fever to call timeout.

Minnesota tied the game on another drive by Moore, but the Fever responded with a 3-pointer by Catchings and a basket by Jessica Davenport to push the lead back to five by the end of the quarter.

Samsung Nexus 10 reported once again in run up to Google event

Android Central

Fresh reports from TheNextWeb today add further weight to a possible Nexus 10 tablet unveiling at Google's Oct. 29 "Playground" event.  The site says the 10-inch device, previously known by its codename "Manta," will pack a 2560x1600 display with an iPad-beating pixel density of 300ppi. TNW reports that the "Manta" tablet will be unveiled alongside the extensively-leaked LG Nexus 4 phone and 32GB Nexus 7 tablet. Naturally, Android 4.2 is expected to run on both Nexus 4 and 10 out of the box.

We've been hearing similar whispers privately for the past couple of weeks, including some strong evidence suggesting the 10-inch Nexus tablet will indeed sport a super-high resolution 2560x1600 display.

The Nexus 10 will go up against Apple's iPad and Microsoft's new Windows RT-based Surface tablet, which is set to launch later this month.

American Academy Of Pediatrics Launches Institute To Battle ...

From The Wall Street Journal?..

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is launching a major new initiative in its fight against childhood obesity, focusing on both prevention and treatment of what has become a major threat to children?s health in the U.S. The new AAP Institute for Healthy Childhood Weight, to be launched Oct. 20-23 at the AAP National Conference & Exhibition in New Orleans, will lead the academy?s efforts in providing pediatricians, families and communities with evidence-based resources to help prevent and treat childhood obesity.

To view the multimedia assets associated with this release, please click http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/american-academy-of-pediatrics-launches-institute-to-battle-childhood-obesity-175016361.html

?Obesity is epidemic in childhood and presents a threat to both child health and to health across the lifespan,? said Sandra Hassink, MD, FAAP, chair of the steering committee of the Institute. ?Pediatricians are in the best position to combat childhood obesity because they are dedicated to children?s health and well-being and build long-term, trusting relationships with families. The Institute for Healthy Childhood Weight will provide pediatricians and other professionals with the tools and knowledge they need to provide care that begins with research and ends in real results.?

The Institute, housed within the AAP, will be funded by a diverse base of corporate sponsors and grants from government and foundations that understand and support the mission and vision of the Institute. As the founding sponsor, Nestle is providing the substantial funding required to launch the Institute.

?In the 10 years since we embarked on the Nestle Feeding Infants and Toddlers Study (FITS) to understand childhood dietary patterns, our commitment to addressing the childhood obesity epidemic has only deepened,? said Jose Saavedra, M.D., FAAP, Medical Director, Nestle Nutrition. ?Our support as the founding sponsor for this new initiative builds on this long-term dedication to the healthy growth and development of all children.?

The Institute will focus on translating policies, best practices and emerging scientific evidence into practical solutions for health care providers, communities and individual families.

For example, earlier this year the AAP released the Healthy Active Living for Families resources, based on research the AAP conducted with parents of young children to learn what type of nutrition and exercise guidance they would welcome. The project, supported in part by a grant from Nestle, created a set of tools on HealthyChildren.org, the AAP website for parents, which offers families interactive features, quizzes and personalized tips to help them make healthy choices around nutrition and exercise for children from birth to age 5. The project will be demonstrated at the Academy?s meeting in New Orleans Sunday, Oct. 21, and can be seen at www.healthychildren.org/growinghealthy .

For pediatricians, the AAP developed the Pediatric ePractice: Optimizing Your Obesity Care, a new virtual office platform funded by a grant from United Health Foundation that showcases all the resources pediatric practices need to conduct obesity prevention, assessment, and treatment.

Many organizations are playing vital roles in the field of obesity prevention; the AAP will fill an important gap by focusing on the health of all children, including those 30 percent who are already overweight and obese.

Darin Greear helps Society of St. Andrews with harvest, donation ...

Darin Greear, a Long & Foster Realtors agent with the New River Valley office in Blacksburg and member of The Palmer Team, made a monetary donation that will provide 20,000 nutritious servings of food to The Society of St. Andrews from money he and wife Tabitha collected from selling corn they raised on their farm in Riner.

This monetary donation is nothing compared to the donation of food the Greears make yearly. The Greears raise more than 6 acres of turnips and now beets for the sole purpose of donating these vegetables to The Society of St. Andrews, an organization that provides fruits and vegetables to many local hunger relief agencies.

There is a huge need for volunteers to help harvest in the fall. Harvesting is very easy, and even small children are capable.

If you would like to find out more information, contact Darin Greear at 320-5859 or contact Sarah Ramey of Virginia Gleaning Network, Society of St. Andrews, at (434) 299-5956 or (800) 333-4597.

LOTTERY EXPO 2012 explodes on the scene. Registrations now exceed 250 people and more are signing up every day. They are coming to hear world-class speakers who are also industry leaders tackle some of the industry's trickiest issues, including:

-- Private Manager Agreement versus traditional government operator model: Pros and Cons. What exactly can a Private Manager (PM) do that the government lottery operator can't do? Will the trend towards PM cause legislators to ask that question and give their government operators more flexibility to act more entrepreneurially, to apply a more reasoned risk-assessment model that supports change and innovation? How will the introduction of this new management model change the industry for everyone? Or will it?

Players Clubs and Loyalty Programs are a fabulous step in the right direction. But what's next? How can lotteries increase player registration in Clubs and Loyalty Programs? And how can lotteries leverage that registered player relationship into increased sales?

Can commercial partners who compete with each other also "play well together"? As new ideas and innovations come from a wider variety of commercial partners, the need for those commercial partners to work together for the benefit of their customers increases. Lotteries need their commercial partners to work together to enable integration of new games, host new transaction-processing for non-traditional games and POS's, and otherwise get creative to facilitate innovation and assimilate new products and services.

Engaging retailer support for multi-channel distribution. The multi-channel approach is both necessary and inevitable. The opposition of NACS (association of convenience stores) continues to be a big obstacle in the U.S. But there ARE solutions and as an industry we need to power through this most perplexing of challenges.

How and why is the internet so much more than a "channel for distribution"? Visionary leaders are using the internet as a communications hub, a medium that revolutionizes the relationship between lottery operator and consumer. The internet is not just a POS or channel of distribution. It is the platform that enables lottery to migrate to a comprehensive CRM (Customer Relationship Management) approach to the business that turns an anonymous player base into a socially connected community of engaged customers.

Schedule: Monday, October 22: 5:00: Opening Night Reception Tues, Oct. 23: U.S. focused conference sessions Weds, Oct. 24: Joint U.S. and Latin America Sessions Thurs, Oct. 25: Focus on Latin America Three Receptions and luncheons provide lots of time to visit with colleagues.Abraham Lincoln

The gaming, gambling, and lottery industry is being reshaped as we speak. Changes in technology, regulations, and consumer tastes are creating tremendous opportunity just as they are obsoleting so much of what has worked in the past. Team Lottery is in the position to take action and shape its destiny - which is a very good thing because it may well be that the only way to predict the future is to be the ones who create it. Lottery Expo will be a very special program, including world-class speakers from all around the world, an imaginative new approach to eliciting fresh insights and provocative discussion, a special track for Latin American Lotteries to complement the traditional focus on North American lotteries, three receptions, three luncheons, three breakfasts (i.e. lots of time to meet with colleagues and discuss the topics of the day), and most of all a mission to make a real difference in the government gaming. Simultaneous translations for Latin American, Caribbean, and Mexican attendees. This will be a uniquely great conference experience - Please come! One of our conference themes is: How can a government lottery integrate the entrepreneurial zeal of a tech start-up when it must comply with a confounding array of government constraints? I asked our commercial sponsors for help in finding a truly world-class expert outside of the lottery industry who could help us understand these issues from a fresh, but on-point perspective.

We are very pleased and honored to announce the Keynote Speaker for the afternoon session at Lottery Expo (Wednesday, October 24). And we want to thank GTECH Corp. for sponsoring this special guest speaker. Dr. Daniel Diermeier is uniquely qualified to help us break down the complexity, to create alignment between our many missions and translate that into the sense of purpose and competitive posture that will indeed serve our "stakeholders". Dr. Diermeier has agreed to apply his extensive research and knowledge to our unique industry-specific challenges. Dr. Daniel Diermeier is the IBM Professor of Regulation and Competitive Practice of Managerial Economics and Decision Sciences, Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University Professor of Political Science at the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences http://www.kellogg.northwestern.edu/faculty/diermeier/personal/ Daniel Diermeier is also the co-founder of the Northwestern Institute on Complex Systems (NICO) and the Chairman of the Northwestern Global Health Foundation. He currently serves as director of the Ford Motor Company Center for Global Citizenship. The Center's mission is to address ? through research and teaching ? the challenges faced by corporations that have become the main agents of global, social and political change. He is also the academic director of the CEO Perspective Program (Kellogg?s most senior executive education program), a joint venture between the Kellogg School of Management, and the Corporate Leadership Center. Professor Daniel Diermeier?s work focuses on political institutions, reputation management, political and regulatory risk, crisis management, and integrated strategy. VooMote Zapper Universal Remote Control for iPad review

Tired of having to search for all of your remote controls and don?t want to pay the high prices for a dedicated universal remote like the Harmony series from Logitech? Well VooMote offers a solution that might be of particular interest to iOS users.

Once you attach the VooMote to your iPad or older generation iPhone or iPod touch (the kind with a traditional 30-pin Dock connector),and run VooMote's proprietary app from the App Store, the combo allows you to gain control of infrared controlled devices such as TV?s, DVD players, DTV receivers and Stereos.

VooMote Zapper Universal Remote Control for iPad review

Setup is straight forward. You?re able to either download pre-configured name-brand signals, or you can teach the Voomote any number of controllers using the original remotes. The VooMote also has the ability to create custom controls, using multiple virtual remotes, in one view. There's even a one-touch option that will turn on or off multiple devices at once, and an option for gesture controls.

Although they advertise a 30 second setup, any unknown devices can be a chore to setup. Once saved, however iCloud can sync those settings to all your iOS devices. Another seemingly neat feature is the interactive TV guide. However, even though my postal code was found, I could never save my settings to the app to get this feature working.

Overall, I can?t say I recommend the VooMote as a replacement to your regular remotes. I found it more tedious to swipe through the different virtual remotes than to simply just use my real remote. I also don?t think that many people would want to devote a dedicated iPod touch or iPad to Voomote, and it's annoying to keep having to stop what you're doing and switch back to the Voomote app on your iPhone when you're trying to do other things.

iOS as a remote control is a great idea. The VooMote just isn't a great implementation yet.
